What Sony announced, and what it did not

Sony announced the Prism Collection on October 28, 2026, in a post on the PlayStation Blog. The line covers two products, DualSense wireless controllers and PS5 console covers, each offered in three transparent designs: Flare Orange, Emerald Green and Graphite Gray. Sony says every colour is finished with a glossy clear coat that shows the hardware underneath instead of hiding it. Pre-orders open on November 10, 2026, and the accessories go on sale on February 4, 2027.

The post carries no individual byline beyond a vice president for global marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, and it presents the release as a design change rather than a new product cycle. Nothing in the announcement describes new buttons, new haptics or a revised battery. The parts inside the controller are the ones already in the DualSense. What changes is the plastic around them, and the price list attached to that plastic.

The designers' case for see-through plastic

Sony's designers frame the collection as a return to a look the industry left behind. "We know how much our fans have been looking forward to the return of transparent controllers," Leo Cardoso, a designer in Sony's Colour, Material, and Finish team, said in the blog post. "We wanted to bring back the iconic see-through trend of the late '90s in a fresh, modern way that complements the PS5's industrial design." The reference is to the late-1990s consoles and controllers that shipped in smoked or crystal shells, a period Sony itself helped define with the original PlayStation.

Satoshi Aoyagi, another designer on the same team, described the three colours in the post: a vibrant orange that turns rosy where the transparent material overlaps, a deep hunter green that gains depth through its transparency, and a cool-toned storm grey. Sony says the clear finish runs across the back of the controller, and a metallic middle cover ties the surfaces together. The blog does not show which internal parts become visible, so the design claim is easier to check against photographs than against the text.

Prices, and where each product is sold

The DualSense controllers carry a recommended retail price of $84.99 in the United States, ¥12,480 in Japan, €84.99 in the eurozone and £74.99 in the United Kingdom. The matching console covers are cheaper at $74.99, ¥9,980, €74.99 and £64.99. Sony adds an asterisk to both figures and notes that actual retailer prices and availability may vary, which is the usual caveat attached to a recommended price rather than a fixed one.

Where the accessories are sold differs by product. The covers are sold exclusively through PlayStation where direct ordering exists, and in other regions in limited quantities through selected retailers. The controllers are described as available globally, which suggests wider retail distribution. Sony lists eleven countries where ordering directly from PlayStation is available: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal and Italy. Buyers outside that list will depend on local retail stock.

The pre-order window and the launch date

The launch date is February 4, 2027, roughly three months after pre-orders open. Pre-orders begin on November 10, 2026, at 10am local time through PlayStation and participating retailers. In the United States the direct pre-order starts at 7:00am PT, which is 10:00am ET. In the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, the direct pre-order starts at 10:00am local time through the PlayStation hardware store.

Sony cautions that the exact launch date and availability may vary by country or region, so February 4 is a global start rather than a guarantee for every market. The post does not give stock quantities, a per-customer limit, or a second wave of colours. It also does not say whether the collection will be restocked after launch. Anyone planning around the covers, which are the more restricted product, has the least certainty.

One more colour line in a crowded generation

IGN notes that Sony has released more than a dozen DualSense colour variants during the PS5 generation, along with limited-edition controllers tied to specific games such as Astro Bot and Death Stranding. The company has also used hardware collaborations, including a DualSense with K-pop artist Lisa, and the 30th Anniversary PlayStation hardware. Against that record, the Prism Collection reads as another colour programme rather than a new accessory category, even though the transparent finish is the most distinctive shell Sony has put on the controller this generation.

The collection also stops short of a transparent console. Sony sells console covers, not clear replacement cases, so the see-through treatment applies to the panels that clip onto the existing PS5. The blog post names the DualSense and the covers only; it does not mention the DualSense Edge, the pro controller Sony sells separately. Whether an Edge version follows is not answered in the announcement, and neither source reports one.

What to watch before February

For anyone who wants the controllers, the practical question is the pre-order window rather than the launch date. November 10 is the first chance to order, and the direct-store route covers eleven countries. The covers are the tighter supply: Sony says limited quantities through select retailers outside the direct markets, which usually means fewer units than demand. Waiting to see the finish in reviews is reasonable, but the limited cover stock may not wait with you.

The other thing to watch is whether the transparent shell becomes a template. Sony has repeated colour lines before, and a well-received Prism run would make a second wave likely. There is no statement about that in the blog post, and IGN's report does not add one. For now the confirmed facts are the three colours, the two product types, the prices, the pre-order date and the February 4 launch. Readers who want more PlayStation coverage can check the PlayStation Plus November lineup, the October catalog and the Modern Warfare 4 launch details.
