Nintendo names November 1 Pikmin Day and dates the Switch 2 Pikmin 4 edition

A surprise Pikmin Direct declared 1 November a permanent Nintendo holiday, dated the Switch 2 edition of Pikmin 4 for 12 November, and gave no word of Pikmin 5.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Nintendo used a surprise nine-minute Pikmin Direct on 31 October to declare 1 November Pikmin Day, a date Miyamoto explained by three Pikmin standing together to look like 11.1.
  • The broadcast dated Pikmin 4 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy for 12 November and a demo for 2 November, and announced Secret Caves for Pikmin Bloom this winter.
  • No new Pikmin game was announced, and both outlets say the Direct carried no Pikmin 5 reveal.

A Direct with no warning and a new holiday

Nintendo announced a Pikmin Direct on Halloween morning with no warning, and used it to declare a new company holiday. The broadcast ran a little more than nine minutes, according to IGN, which also puts it at under ten. Shigeru Miyamoto opened it by saying that November 1 would from now on be Pikmin Day, and Kotaku quotes his wording: "Starting this year, we're going to start calling November 1st Pikmin Day." Nintendo of America's account marked the day by telling players to join in by playing Pikmin games on Switch 2 and Switch, IGN reports.

The Direct carried no new game announcement. IGN states plainly that there was no Pikmin 5 reveal, and Kotaku says the broadcast had updates for two recent Pikmin titles but no information about new games. What it did carry was a release date for the Switch 2 edition of Pikmin 4, a demo date, a Pikmin Bloom update and the first of a new series of animated shorts.

Why November 1, and why not the anniversary

The date is not an anniversary. IGN notes that the series launched in Japan in October 2001 and reached North America in December, so November 1 does not match a release. Miyamoto's explanation is typographic: there were originally only three Pikmin, and three of them standing next to each other look like "11.1", IGN reports. Kotaku gives the same reasoning, describing three Pikmin shoulder to shoulder resembling the date.

That is a marketing hook rather than a historical one, and both outlets treat it that way. Kotaku points out that the original Pikmin arrived on the GameCube in the fall of 2001, which puts the new holiday near the anniversary without marking it. The same piece notes that the date now shares a day with the Day of the Dead. The practical effect is a fixed date Nintendo can use every year, which is more useful to a company than a one-off anniversary.

The one dated release is Pikmin 4 on Switch 2

The concrete release in the broadcast was Pikmin 4's Switch 2 edition. IGN gives the date as November 12, 2026, for Pikmin 4 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy, and Kotaku describes the same edition arriving in two weeks. The new version uses the console's built-in microphone to give Oatchi spoken commands, with IGN listing "rush" and "go to work" as examples.

Dandori Academy is the other addition, and the two reports describe its rules slightly differently. IGN says the mode brings new challenges, including exams on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays that give timed tasks and a chance to earn medals. Kotaku calls it a timed treasure rush where you get one try between Friday and Sunday for a submitted score, with practice allowed during the week.

The demo arrives two days before launch

A demo arrives before the game. IGN reports that it opens on November 2, that progress carries into the full release, and that it covers the Sun-Speckled Terrace opening area plus two Dandori Academy stages. Kotaku, writing on 31 October, calls the demo date Monday, which matches.

The demo timing matters more than it usually would, because the mode it samples is score based. Kotaku is explicit that the demo is for the new mode rather than the whole game. A player who can practise the exams for a week before the submitted attempt gets a different first experience from one who meets them cold on launch day. Neither report says whether practice runs in the demo count toward anything once the full game starts.

Pikmin Bloom gets caves this winter

The mobile game got the largest structural change. IGN reports that Pikmin Bloom will add Secret Caves this winter, five years after Nintendo brought the augmented-reality game to phones in 2021. The caves are exploration events: players collect a cave map, which can be found on items such as Postcards, then send Pikmin underground to look for treasure.

IGN lists a rubber duck, a sword, a cookie and a chef hat among the items shown, and says a battle can follow, with players choosing to attack or retreat. It also notes that Dandori Academy challenges give players another way to collect cave maps. Kotaku describes the same addition as caves in the mobile game, comparing them to the gauntlets of the console series and noting the risk of losing Pikmin. Neither report gives a date beyond this winter.

What the Direct did and did not promise

The Direct's clearest message was about volume rather than a single release. IGN reports that new Pikmin shorts will be released monthly through the Nintendo Today! app and other channels, with one episode due the next day and another later in November. Miyamoto said he is working with Nintendo Pictures staff on them, and Fuka Koshiba, a Japanese actress, appeared in the broadcast as a Pikmin fan. Kotaku describes the same plan, saying the once mysterious cartoons will soon be a monthly occurrence.

None of that answers the question a Pikmin 5 hopeful would ask. Both outlets say no new game was announced, and the only dated software is the Switch 2 edition on November 12. The site's file on Nintendo's cancelled Kirby Air Riders Halloween event covers the same publisher pulling a seasonal plan on short notice this week, while the Ocarina of Time remake's list of changes and the Mario Kart World datamine cover two other Nintendo releases in the same window.
