Mario Kart World datamine points to nine unused drivers

Files list Spiny and eight other characters as drivers, but there is no model or animation, and the dataminer cannot say whether they were cut or are planned for DLC.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • A datamine of Mario Kart World lists Spiny, internally named Togezo, among driver references, along with eight other characters including Blooper, Ninji and Chain Chomp.
  • Eurogamer reports that no model or animation for Spiny has been found, and Nintendo Wire notes there is no way to tell whether the drivers were cut, planned for DLC, or both.
  • The find follows a Switch 2 exploit that has allowed several of the console's games to be datamined, with Mario Kart World among the first titles examined.

What the files actually contain

A dataminer has found references to Spiny as a driver in Mario Kart World. Eurogamer reports that the character's internal name, Togezo, appears alongside a selection of other characters, and that as of writing there is no model, no animation and no indication of how Spiny would drive a kart.

That gap is the important part. A name in a file is not a finished character, and Eurogamer is careful to say what was not found as well as what was. Spiny is a long-running Mario enemy introduced in Super Mario Bros. in 1985, which makes the idea of it driving amusing, and Eurogamer notes that Boo, another character not obviously built for driving, is already playable, which makes a Spiny driver plausible without making it real. The evidence so far, though, is a string in a character list rather than a playable build. The find was reported on October 29 by both outlets.

Nine drivers, according to the datamine

Nintendo Wire reports that the file related to character weight stats contains references to nine total drivers. The list it publishes includes Twomp, Blooper, Ninji, Goomba twins, Chain Chomp, Fuzzy, Bird and Banana, alongside Spiny. Nintendo Wire attributes the discovery to modder Rimea and Bluesky user mondomega.

The outlet is explicit about the uncertainty. It says there is no way to tell whether these drivers were cut during development, planned for unannounced DLC, or some combination of both. It also notes that some of them already appear in the game as items or obstacles, and that Mario Kart World currently has no playable drivers that are also usable items, which may explain why Blooper and Banana are not selectable. The list is a snapshot of a weight-stat file, not a roster screen.

Why Switch 2 games are being datamined now

Nintendo Wire places the find in a wider context: an exploit discovered last week, developed with help from OpenAI, has given researchers access to the Switch 2 and its games' inner workings, and several titles have since been datamined. Mario Kart World was the game used to demonstrate the hack worked, which is why it is among the first to be examined.

That detail matters for how much weight to give the list. A datamine shows what exists in the build that was examined, not what Nintendo intends to release. The same files can contain leftovers from earlier designs, placeholders, and content planned for later, and none of those possibilities is more likely than the others from the data alone. The exploit's existence also raises a question neither outlet answers: how much of the console's library can be examined this way.

Cut content or future DLC?

The honest answer is that nobody outside Nintendo knows. A character list can survive several development passes, and a name can be added early and removed late. Eurogamer's report and Nintendo Wire's list both stop short of claiming a reveal, and neither outlet says a source told them the drivers are coming. A datamine cannot show intent, and Nintendo has not commented in either report.

There is a commercial reason to be cautious as well. Mario Kart World is a launch title that has already received updates, including a battle mode and team races for its Knockout Tour mode, according to Eurogamer. Nintendo has shown it will add content after release, but it has not announced character DLC, and a datamine is not an announcement. A name in a build can survive several redesigns without ever being intended for release.

The game that shipped

Eurogamer describes Mario Kart World as a great racing game that has done well, and notes its role as a Switch 2 launch title during the console's strong sales. The site's own file on the game's October update covers what changed in the current build, which is the version players can actually test. That file covers the changes players can verify in the current build.

For anyone hoping to drive a Spiny, the practical situation is unchanged: the roster is what the game offers today, and the datamine adds a question rather than a character. The site's other Nintendo coverage, including Star Fox's multiplayer update and Switch Sports Resort's online requirements, follows the same pattern of post-launch changes that are announced rather than discovered.

What to watch next

The next real signal would be a Nintendo announcement, a Direct segment or a patch note that adds characters. Until then, the datamine is best treated as evidence of what was in a file, not of what is coming. That is a lower bar than most coverage of the story implies.

One thing worth watching is whether the exploit leads to more leaks of unreleased content across Switch 2 games. Nintendo Wire expects more to come from the same access, and if that happens, readers will have to weigh each find on the same terms: what is in the files, what the studio has said, and the distance between the two. For now, the roster question is unanswered.
