THE SHORT VERSION

  • Charting the Unknown is out now on PS5 for £19.99 / $24.99 and adds post-game content rather than a single new story: three character questlines, endgame combat challenges, a romance system, new housing and a sailing ship with an ocean questline.
  • Every part of it sits behind a requirement. The new quests and the Garden of Trials need the main story finished, the ship opens during the Grounds of the Sunrise faction quest, and the housing needs the Howling Hill camp and Luke's Request.
  • Charting the Unknown costs £19.99 / $24.99 and adds three post-game questlines, new housing, a romance system and an ocean sailing area.

What shipped, and what it costs

Pearl Abyss released Charting the Unknown on PS5 on 29 October 2026, priced at £19.99 / $24.99. Push Square calls it a mammoth expansion, and the contents support the word. PC Gamer's guide describes it as something other than a focused story expansion: endgame challenges, new housing options, a romance system, and a sailing ship with an ocean questline around Pywel's coast and islands.

The story content that does exist comes in three parts, one for each playable character. Kliff, Oongka and Damiane each get a new questline, and all three are post-game missions that need the base campaign finished first. Push Square quotes the spread of those plots: "an ominous presence in the desert and a dangerous political conflict to a journey beyond time, and an ancient secret beneath the waves". A diving suit opens the underwater sections. PC Gamer says the three questlines begin in Pailune and Demeniss once the main story is complete.

The unlocks you need before any of it starts

Campaign completion gates the questlines and the Garden of Trials, a set of new combat challenges. PC Gamer's route to the trials starts at the Axiom Archive in the abyss, where Alustin is first met early in the game. From there, turn right before the building's staircase and door to find a corridor into the new annex. Players who never finished the story cannot reach any of it. The trials are combat encounters rather than story content, and the annex holding them sits off that corridor.

The ship has its own gate, earlier in the game than the trials. It unlocks after "Expanding the Camp" during "Gathered Will" in the "Grounds of the Sunrise" Greymane faction quest, which then opens a quest to build your first vessel and leads into the ocean story. A medium ship costs 1.2 million camp funds and a large one 6 million, or you can build either for fewer funds and more materials.

Romance, marriage and a house to put people in

The romance system runs on two meters. You reach 100 trust with a character, pick the "seduce" option in their interaction menu, and once likeability fills you can "propose". The four witches have new faction quests that build both values and make them romance options. A married character can follow you in the world or live at your house, and the game lets you divorce afterwards. The interaction menu also shows whether a character can be romanced at all, which saves guessing before you spend time on trust.

Housing expands alongside it. Unlocking the Greymane Camp on Howling Hill and completing Luke's request in "Grounds of the Sunrise" opens new housing options and puts facility icons on the map, marking strongholds you can rent and run as management facilities. A region has to be liberated and its faction quest finished before a facility becomes usable, so the property side is gated the same way as the quests.

The ocean is the largest addition

The expansion adds water to a map that was already enormous. Push Square notes that the base game's scale was off the charts before this release, and that the ocean now counts as playable space, with the coastline and islands around Pywel opened up by ship. That is a different kind of content from another quest hub: it changes how you move through a region you have already crossed on foot.

Push Square's second review of the base game gave it 8/10 and described "an all-consuming open world adventure that hits some truly incredible highs", while warning about its more obtuse moments. The expansion does not appear to sand those down. It adds systems on top of them, and neither report describes it changing how the base game explains itself, which is worth knowing before paying for more of a game you already found frustrating.

Whether to start now

If the campaign is unfinished, the expansion can wait. Its three questlines, the Garden of Trials and the ship's ocean story all sit behind progress you have not made yet, so buying it now adds nothing you can play tonight. The reverse is also true: a player who finished the story and wants the combat challenges has a clear route in, and one who wants the house and the romance has two smaller gates to clear first.

The expansion also arrives while players have plenty else to play. Phantom Blade Zero's launch drew 448,000 concurrent players on Steam, which is one measure of how crowded the release window is. Charting the Unknown is a large addition to a game that already asks for a hundred hours before its post-game begins, and the honest advice for anyone short of time is to finish the campaign first and decide after that.
