THE SHORT VERSION

  • Square Enix has shown the first Switch 2 footage of Final Fantasy VII Revelation and says the multi-platform build cost nothing in the game experience.

The first Switch 2 gameplay

Final Fantasy VII Revelation has appeared on Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time, in footage from Paris Games Week. Nintendo Everything reports that visitors to Nintendo's booth could go hands-on with the game, and that director Naoki Hamaguchi presented extended gameplay at a special stage show. The outlet has about 30 minutes of footage from that presentation. Nintendo Everything describes Paris Games Week as a big presence for the RPG, with the footage coming from the presentation rather than a trailer.

The footage is docked and captured off-screen rather than supplied as a clean feed, so it shows the Switch 2 version running on a television but not pixel-for-pixel output. Neither outlet reports a frame rate or a resolution for the port, and neither has a technical analysis of how the console handles the game. The booth demo and the stage show are described as the first chance for the public to play the game on Nintendo hardware.

One date, four platforms

Revelation is set for a simultaneous release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 on 8 April 2027. GoNintendo reports that date and notes the game is the final chapter of the remake project, following the story through Meteor, Sephiroth and the airship Highwind. Neither outlet says whether the footage came from the opening section of the game or from later in the story.

A same-day launch across hardware with very different capabilities is the context for the interview that both outlets draw on. Hamaguchi was speaking to One More Game about how the project handles that spread, and his answer is the part of the story that has travelled furthest. Nintendo Everything lists the Highwind airship, newly playable party members Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine, and a combat system that mixes real-time action with command-based Tactical Mode.

What Hamaguchi said about ports

GoNintendo reports that the core team usually develops for PlayStation 5 and PC, while a separate porting team handles the other versions, including Switch 2. The reason given is that different optimisations are needed to keep each version running smoothly, and that splitting the work lets each platform get the best version available. GoNintendo describes the game as the culmination of thirty years of Final Fantasy VII storytelling.

The director then addressed the obvious worry directly. According to GoNintendo, Hamaguchi stated that the team "did not make sacrifices to the game experience", and that multiplatform development never led to changes in the game as far as the experience goes. That is a studio claim, and neither outlet tests it against the footage. The interview was conducted by One More Game and relayed by GoNintendo, with Genki credited for the tip.

How much the claim covers

The claim is narrower than it first sounds. It covers design goals and the experience, not performance, and it says nothing about resolution, frame rate or load times on any platform. The Switch 2 footage exists, but it is off-screen capture, which is a weak instrument for judging how a version runs. That distinction matters for anyone deciding whether to buy the Switch 2 version on day one.

There is also no comparison in either report. Neither outlet puts the Switch 2 build beside the PlayStation 5 or PC versions, so readers cannot check whether the port looks or performs differently. The claim is therefore a statement of intent from the studio, reported faithfully, rather than a tested result. Neither outlet asks how the porting team divides the work, or whether the Switch 2 version required cutbacks in any specific area.

A crowded 2027 calendar

The date puts Revelation in the same year as several other Switch 2 releases already announced. The site's file on Capcom's Mega Man revival covers another 2027 title for the platform, and Pikmin 4's Switch 2 Edition shows what Nintendo is shipping in the meantime. Paris Games Week also gave Square Enix a chance to show the game to a European audience ahead of launch.

Square Enix has its own schedule to manage as well. Final Fantasy XIV's Evercold expansion was moved to February 2027, which leaves the publisher with a crowded first half of the year across two very different Final Fantasy projects. Square Enix has not said whether the Switch 2 version will be shown again before launch.

What would settle the question

The next useful pieces of evidence are a direct feed of Switch 2 gameplay, a technical comparison from a outlet that measures frame rate and resolution, and a hands-on that plays the version rather than watching it. None of those appears in either report. The next useful evidence includes a direct feed of Switch 2 footage and a measurement-driven comparison with the other versions.

For now the record is two things: a date and platform list that both outlets agree on, and a director saying the ports did not cost the game anything. The first is checkable today. The second will be checkable when the game ships in April. The April date itself is the one detail both outlets state without qualification.
