Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold slips from January to February 23, 2027

Square Enix dated the 8.0 expansion at the Fan Fest in Japan, with early access from 19 February, pre-orders opening on 4 November and a Collector's Edition.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold will launch on 23 February 2027, with early access from 19 February, after a January 2027 window announced in April.
  • Gematsu reports the date and the Collector's Edition contents, while IGN reports the keynote where Naoki Yoshida presented the expansion and describes the move as a four-week delay.
  • Pre-orders open on 4 November, and neither report gives a reason for the change or a price for any edition.

The date Square Enix gave

Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold will launch on 23 February 2027, Square Enix announced at the Fan Fest event in Japan, moving the expansion out of the January window the company had given it. Gematsu reports that the patch 8.0 expansion was previously planned for January 2027 and that early access begins on 19 February 2027. IGN traces the original target to the expansion's reveal in April, at the North American Fan Fest, when January 2027 was the only timing the company attached to it.

Both reports treat the announcement as a release date reveal rather than a scheduling update in passing. Gematsu describes Evercold as the patch 8.0 expansion and lists the platforms the game is already on, which are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam. IGN uses the same version number and frames the expansion as the point where the game moves into 8.0, so the two accounts agree on what is shipping even though they were written from different briefings.

The trailer that carried the date

The date arrived with the expansion's full opening cinematic. IGN reports that the third and final teaser trailer is the complete intro cinematic for Evercold, and that it opened the Fan Fest keynote in Japan, where director and producer Naoki Yoshida presented new features, the direction of the story and changes to core gameplay as the game moves into version 8.0. IGN describes that structure as typical for the game, with the last teaser turning out to be the opening movie.

Gematsu covers the same event through the videos published alongside the date. Its list includes a release date trailer in English and Japanese, a trailer for the new job Zephyr, area trailers for Sessrymnir, Realmship of Earth and Skioblaonir, Realmship of Wind, a dungeon crawl segment, an Evangelion trailer and a Collector's Edition trailer titled Valhallar Odin. Neither outlet describes the cinematic itself, and neither quotes Yoshida on the schedule.

Four weeks, or a month and three

The size of the delay is described differently in the two reports. IGN says the move was said to be only a four-week delay, a figure it attributes to the announcement, while Gematsu records a shift from a previously planned January 2027 window to 23 February without putting a number on it. A four-week slip lands in late February only if the original internal target sat at the end of January, which is the reading that makes the two accounts fit together.

Neither report gives a reason. No feature is named as the cause, no certification problem is mentioned, and neither outlet quotes Square Enix explaining the change. IGN's account of the keynote covers the new jobs, the story and the move to version 8.0 without tying any of them to the date, and Gematsu's report carries no statement beyond the date, the early access window and the pre-order start.

What opens for pre-order on 4 November

Pre-orders open on 4 November, according to both reports. IGN notes that the pre-order bonuses were to be revealed later in the keynote and that its report would be updated as they were shown, and Gematsu's account does not list them either. That leaves the pre-order offer as the one part of the announcement the two reports leave open, three days before players can put money down on it.

The Collector's Edition is the bundle both reports describe. Gematsu lists a Reaper figure, an Ethos metal keychain, a Kottr mini plush, a Tapestry of the Fourth and an Evercold special art box, and its video list includes a Collector's Edition trailer. Neither report gives a price for the expansion, for the Collector's Edition or for any other version, and neither says whether a physical release is planned.

Jobs, areas and two crossovers

Two new jobs are named across the two reports. IGN describes Zephyr as a ranged DPS job that uses a crossbow as its primary weapon and commands an avian companion, and it lists Bastion as a new tank job. Gematsu puts Zephyr in its trailer list and names the expansion's two new areas, Sessrymnir, Realmship of Earth and Skioblaonir, Realmship of Wind, along with a segment labelled More Locales from the Fourth.

The crossover content is the other headline. IGN reports a Neon Genesis Evangelion crossover raid series and a Final Fantasy VII crossover raid series, alongside a new world and a continuation of the main story. Gematsu's video list includes an Evangelion trailer and a dungeon crawl segment. Neither report says how many raid tiers ship with the expansion, how the crossover content is unlocked, or what the dungeon crawl involves.

The date is the thing to check

The date is the part worth watching, because the last window moved. The Duskbloods was pushed into 2027 so FromSoftware could finish adjusting rules and balance, and that studio attached a reason to its new year in a short statement. Square Enix has attached a date and no reason, which is the difference between the two announcements and the reason the four-week figure is worth holding loosely.

Pre-orders opening on 4 November also start a longer selling window than a January release would have allowed. The competition for those months is visible elsewhere: Soulframe opens to everyone on 6 November, Destiny 2's unvaulting has slipped to early 2028 while its studio plans a year of production, and Resonance of Fate's enhanced remaster arrived on PS5 and PC this week. Evercold's February date is the only one of those that Square Enix controls.
