THE SHORT VERSION

  • Funcom will release Blood and Ice, a free Dune: Awakening expansion, on 1 December for PC, PS5 and Xbox.
  • The expansion adds the Polar Sink, a map split into tundra and ice cap where players must stay warm and harvest ice rather than survive heat.
  • Offline single-player arrives this month, with character transfers and full cross-play in January 2027.

A free expansion arrives on 1 December

Funcom will release Blood and Ice, a free expansion for the survival MMO Dune: Awakening, on 1st December, Eurogamer reported on 1 November. The add-on is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox, and Eurogamer says it adds “around 35 hours of new progression”, plus new vehicle modules, augments and specialisation traits.

The expansion moves the game off Arrakis. Rock Paper Shotgun, which also reported the release date on 1 November, describes Blood and Ice as swapping “sand for snow”, and quotes a Steam blog post from the studio describing a map built for cold rather than heat.

The Polar Sink inverts the survival loop

The new map is called the Polar Sink. Eurogamer reports that it is split into two biomes, the tundra and the ice cap, and that players begin in the tundra, where wealthy water shipper families have built strongholds, before trying to reach the heavily guarded ice cap. RPS adds that the blog describes conditions in the tundra as more manageable than on the ice cap itself, while warning that the families there will not welcome anyone interfering with their operations.

Rock Paper Shotgun quotes Funcom saying that “instead of protecting yourself from extreme heat, you’ll need to find ways to stay warm”. The studio’s blog post, as quoted by RPS, says the technology players developed for the desert will not be enough, and that gear must be upgraded with resources that exist only in the new region. Once inside the ice cap, players can harvest ice, which Eurogamer says can be used to cool base equipment and speed up production; RPS quotes the same line about cooling and production, and adds that the expansion will be followed by further updates giving players reasons to return to the region.

New events, and a cosmetics store

Eurogamer reports that Blood and Ice adds an Events tab to the main menu, and that a new event called Water Crisis will follow the current one, The Scourge. Both outlets note that the studio says events can be completed in single-player and in multiplayer, and that Funcom plans to run them more often, each with new stories and free rewards.

Funcom has also opened a cosmetics store, which Eurogamer says the studio describes as a way to fund continued development and free updates. The first selection rotates, and Eurogamer reports that it includes looks taken from the Dune films to coincide with the December cinema release of Dune: Part Three. RPS quotes the store description as offering “optional cosmetic items, including outfits, vehicle variants, and additional ways to customize your bases”. Eurogamer adds that the plan is eventually to make the full catalogue available at all times. RPS treats the store as a separate addition to the expansion, describing outfits, vehicle variants and base customisation as the kinds of items on offer.

Offline play this month, transfers and cross-play in January

The preservation angle is the part RPS leads on. It reports that an offline mode arrives in November, so the game can be played without an internet connection, and frames that as a safeguard if servers eventually go down. Eurogamer lists the same offline single-player mode as due this month.

Both reports put character transfers in January 2027: players will be able to copy characters from multiplayer servers into single-player, and from single-player to selected private or self-hosted servers on PC. Eurogamer adds that full cross-play also arrives in January 2027. Neither report gives a specific day in November for the offline mode, and neither says whether transfers will be available on console at the same time.

A million new players, and a studio restructuring

Eurogamer reports that more than a million new players have joined since the game launched on consoles, alongside a rebuilt endgame, three DLCs and the conclusion of the first story arc, Book One. It also reports that Funcom recently confirmed a period of restructuring and layoffs following the console release, and recalls that the studio made a similar move this time last year, months after the game first launched on PC.

The same report quotes the studio saying “we’re far from done”, and describing “ambitious plans for the year ahead”, including major free updates in 2027. Neither outlet reports how the restructuring affects the Blood and Ice schedule, and neither carries a statement from Funcom about the layoffs beyond the confirmation already reported.

What the two reports establish, and what they leave open

Taken together, the two reports agree on the essentials: the expansion is free, it launches on 1st December, it adds the Polar Sink map with a tundra and an ice cap, it carries roughly 35 hours of progression, and offline mode comes in November with character transfers and cross-play in January 2027. Eurogamer supplies the awards-style detail on modules, augments and traits; RPS supplies the Steam blog quotes that explain the design thinking.

Neither article states a price for the cosmetic items, a release date for any future paid content, or whether the offline mode will be available on console on day one. RPS dates Dune: Part Three to 18 December, which places the expansion a little earlier in the month than the film.
