Save Mass Effect graffiti appears outside EA's Madrid office

Photographs posted to Reddit on 31 October appear to show Save Mass Effect spray-painted at EA's Madrid office, in at least two places according to IGN. The tag follows a petition that IGN puts at 290,000 signatures and a Times Square billboard bought for 26 October, which Kotaku describes as a 15 second spot.

Photos posted to Reddit show Save Mass Effect spray-painted at EA's Madrid office, days after EA closed BioWare, as a petition passes 290,000 signatures.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Photographs posted to Reddit on 31 October appear to show Save Mass Effect spray-painted at EA's Madrid office, in at least two places according to IGN.
  • The tag follows a petition that IGN puts at 290,000 signatures and a Times Square billboard bought for 26 October, which Kotaku describes as a 15 second spot.
  • EA closed BioWare earlier in the month and cancelled Mass Effect: Universe; Bloomberg reported that Mass Effect 5 was dropped in favour of Star Wars Battlefront 3.

Two tags at a Madrid office

Photographs posted to Reddit on 31 October appear to show the words Save Mass Effect spray-painted at EA's office in Madrid. The poster, who uses the name Ok_Link9625, wrote that they came across the building while leaving a cinema and saw the paint on the floor by the entrance and on the wall in front of the offices. IGN reports that the images show at least two separate instances of the tag around the location.

Kotaku describes the paint as scrawled in front of the office's front gate and along one wall. Both outlets treat the photographs as credible, and neither confirms who painted them. Neither report includes a comment from EA or from BioWare. IGN frames the damage as the latest turn in a story that began when the publisher put the series on an indefinite hold earlier in the month.

A petition, a billboard and a hashtag

The graffiti follows a campaign that had already moved beyond social media. IGN reports that a Save Mass Effect petition gathered 290,000 signatures by the time its piece was published, and that fans organised a billboard in Times Square for 26 October. Kotaku describes the same buy as a 15 second advertising spot and puts the petition at well over a quarter of a million signatures.

IGN names We Are Mass Effect as the group behind the New York display and reports that it plans to fund more billboards, including one outside this year's The Game Awards. The petition, as Kotaku describes it, asks EA to keep making games in the series with or without BioWare. The hashtag itself appeared within days of the studio closure, which is the part that made the campaign unusual: it had a name before it had a plan. Neither outlet reports how the group raised the money for the display, and neither says what the spot cost.

The community is not of one mind

Reaction among fans has been divided, and both outlets say so. IGN quotes a top comment reading Hell yeah and another reply arguing that tagging buildings is unlikely to convince the publisher the series is worth saving. Kotaku describes fans as torn between seeing the paint as a bad look for the community and as a wasted effort.

IGN also quotes a post from Kala Elizabeth saying that the campaign did not ask people to do this, that vandalism is bad, and that the size of the response in Madrid is still striking. The series composer, in IGN's account, remarked that the fans are serious as a heart attack. That mixture of sympathy and disapproval runs through most of the replies both outlets cite. Neither outlet polls fans, so the split is illustrated by comments rather than measured.

What EA actually did

The campaign is a response to a specific sequence of events. Kotaku reports that EA announced earlier in the month that it was closing BioWare, and IGN says the publisher put the series on an indefinite hold and cancelled the project known as Mass Effect: Universe. IGN's own page for the game is titled Mass Effect 5: Next Chapter and marked as cancelled.

Bloomberg's reporting, cited by IGN, says EA dropped plans to release Mass Effect 5 in favour of prioritising Star Wars Battlefront 3. Kotaku attributes a similar account to Jason Schreier's sources, who told him the publisher chose safer Star Wars tie-ins. IGN adds that the cancelled game was said to have been built around a story that accounted for choices players made across the earlier trilogy. Kotaku frames the decision as a publisher retreating to a franchise with a guaranteed audience.

The Madrid building and the limits of a tag

Kotaku notes that the Spanish office largely works on EA Sports titles, which makes it an odd target for a protest about a science fiction role-playing series. That detail matters for judging what the paint can achieve. A regional office that does not develop Mass Effect has no visible say over whether another Mass Effect game is commissioned.

Both outlets are sceptical that any of this reverses the decision. IGN writes that neither billboards nor graffiti appear to have moved EA so far. Kotaku argues that even a campaign that reached an executive would not change the fact that the studio responsible for the series has closed, and describes EA as a publisher not known for caretaking its legacy franchises or studios.

What would count as an answer

The measurable next steps are a statement from EA, a response to the petition, and the promised billboard around The Game Awards. None of those has happened in either report. A signature count measures feeling rather than leverage, and the numbers are the only figures in the story that have moved since the closure.

Kotaku closes its piece with politics rather than paint. It reports that Avi Lewis, the recently elected leader of Canada's federal New Democratic Party, said policy should make it harder for private equity to close Canadian studios, and went further by suggesting that BioWare staff should receive public funding to rebuild the studio themselves. That proposal is a long way from a green light for another game, and it is the only forward-looking plan either outlet prints. Readers following the wider pattern of closures can use this site's report on id Software and MachineGames for the studio side of the same trend, and the Celeste and Towerfall delisting for what happens when a publisher stops maintaining a catalogue. Fan projects carry their own legal risk, as the Skyblivion volunteer lawsuit shows.
