Walmart offers a 48-hour reorder window and a $519 gift card after Zelda Switch 2 cancellations

Walmart told customers their Zelda Edition Switch 2 pre-orders were cancelled in error, then offered a 48-hour reorder and, in some cases, a $519 eGift card worth the console's price.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Kotaku reports that Walmart's customer service email calls the Zelda Edition Switch 2 cancellations "in error" and places an "Exclusive Reservation" item in the affected customer's cart, with 48 hours to check out.
  • GoNintendo reports a second email that offers a $519 Walmart gift card, the price of the special edition console, though it is not clear whether every cancelled customer receives both messages.
  • Both outlets tie the timing to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, which Kotaku reports arrives on Switch 2 on November 5.

Walmart sent two emails and a 48-hour window

Walmart has started emailing the customers whose Zelda Edition Switch 2 pre-orders were cancelled, and the message treats the cancellations as a mistake. Kotaku reports that the email says the orders were cancelled "in error" and points shoppers to an item called "Exclusive Reservation" in their cart. Checking out with that item reserves the console again, but the same email gives the customer 48 hours to claim it. Kotaku describes the exercise as an attempt at a make good, and one that lasts only a limited time.

GoNintendo describes the same sequence in two parts. The first email lets a customer re-order the console within 48 hours and, in the site's reading, presumably guarantees a place in line. A second email goes further and offers a Walmart gift card worth $519, which GoNintendo notes is the cost of the special edition console. Kotaku quotes the phrase "in error" from the customer service message rather than reproducing the message whole. Neither outlet says whether the 48 hours run from the moment the email arrives or from a fixed date.

A gift card equal to the console's price

The gift card is the part of the offer that travelled furthest. Kotaku reports that Walmart is including a $519 eGift card "for the inconvenience" in some cases, and it notes that $519 was the original price of the console. Wario64, the deals account that tracked the cancellations, wrote on Bluesky that the card effectively makes the console free, a post Kotaku quotes in its report. The Bluesky post is timestamped 01:27 UTC on 31 October, roughly half an hour before Kotaku published, so the card was public before the outlet confirmed it.

Kotaku's own framing is drier. It suggests the card could go toward a Zelda Pro Controller, or groceries, and it presents the card as compensation for the inconvenience rather than a discount on the hardware. GoNintendo reaches the same practical conclusion, writing that a customer whose order was cancelled can now buy the console through Walmart "essentially for free". Neither report says the card carries a condition that ties it to Nintendo hardware.

What happened to the pre-orders

The cancellations landed just before the console was due to reach buyers. GoNintendo reports that the Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 went on sale this week and that the launch came with "some major mishaps". The site names Walmart as one of the biggest sources of trouble, and says numerous customers reported orders cancelled shortly before release.

Kotaku writes for the people affected, opening on the "nightmare" of a pre-order cancelled "at the last minute". Neither outlet reports a cause for the cancellations, and neither quotes a Walmart spokesperson explaining them. Kotaku also lists what the themed package contains: a special console, a Pro Controller, a carrying case and a special edition foil game box.

Not every cancelled order gets both emails

The two emails are not described as a single package. GoNintendo writes that it is "not entirely clear if all customers are receiving both of these e-mails, or if there's some other behind the scenes selection process". That leaves the $519 card as something a customer may or may not receive, decided by criteria the site could not establish.

Kotaku uses the same hedge, saying Walmart is throwing the card in "in some cases". For a reader holding a cancellation message, the advice in both reports points the same way: open the mailbox used for the original order, look for the reservation item in the cart, and finish checkout well inside the 48-hour window. The reservation sits in the cart rather than behind an emailed link, which makes the cart the first place Kotaku's description sends a reader.

The console and the Ocarina of Time remake

The hardware is a themed version of Nintendo's new console built around The Legend of Zelda. Kotaku reports that the remake the package is tied to, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, arrives on Switch 2 on November 5. That date gives the 48-hour window a second edge, because a reordered console still has to ship.

Kotaku frames the shipping question directly, hoping that any console that has to ship arrives in time for the remake. GoNintendo closes on a similar note, hoping the response signals the end of the supply chain issues behind the cancellations. GoNintendo ties the console to the series' 40th anniversary, which is how the site frames the year of Zelda hardware around the launch. Neither report offers a delivery estimate, and neither says whether cancelled orders move to the front of the queue.

What the two reports leave open

Three questions stay open. Neither outlet reports how many pre-orders were cancelled, whether Walmart will repeat the offer for later batches, or what happens to a customer who misses the 48-hour window. GoNintendo's "presumably" about a guaranteed place in line is as close as either report comes to describing priority for affected buyers. What the two reports do agree on is the shape of the remedy: an email, a cart item and a deadline.

The episode also lands in a crowded month for Switch 2 owners. Our report on the Ocarina of Time remake trailer covers what Nintendo has shown of the game, the Ocarina of Time producer's remarks record how the team described the project, and the Xbox Series supply constraint shows how another platform holder is managing hardware shortages this month.
