Xbox’s October Free Play Days has three different access rules

Three games require Game Pass, two are three-hour trials for all Xbox players, and Riders Republic stays open through October 26. The distinction matters before you download.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Dying Light 2, Let’s Build a Zoo, and Tropico 6 require Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential for the October 22–25 access window.
  • Monster Hunter Stories and its sequel are three-hour trials for all Xbox players; Riders Republic is open to all Xbox players through October 26.
  • Xbox says players can buy eligible games at limited discounts and keep Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event, with terms varying by title and region.

The six games fall into three access groups

Xbox’s October 22 Free Play Days announcement covers six games, but “free” does not mean the same thing for all of them. Dying Light 2: Stay Human – Reloaded Edition, Let’s Build a Zoo, and Tropico 6 are available from October 22 through October 25 for Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential members. Monster Hunter Stories and Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin are three-hour trials open to all Xbox players. Riders Republic is also open to all Xbox players, with its event running through October 26.

That gives a reader three separate questions before installing: do I have the required subscription, is this a timed trial or full temporary access, and which date ends my chance to play? Pure Xbox’s updated lineup article makes the same division, separating the three subscription games from the two timed trials and the Riders Republic event. Check the individual store page before downloading, because the words “Free Play Days” can describe different limits inside one weekly lineup.

Three games use a Game Pass membership

The subscription group includes an open-world zombie game, a zoo-management game, and a city-building strategy game. Xbox lists Dying Light 2: Stay Human – Reloaded Edition for Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential members from October 22 to October 25. The same membership requirement applies to Let’s Build a Zoo and Tropico 6. The event post directs players to each product page, where they must be signed in to see the install option tied to their subscription.

If you do not have one of those tiers, the event listing does not promise access to these three titles. That is different from the trials below, which Xbox explicitly says do not require a membership. The weekend access is also temporary. Xbox says players can purchase the games and continue playing afterward. If you are only testing one title, check the end date on the store page before beginning a long campaign or building session.

Monster Hunter Stories gives everyone three hours

Both Monster Hunter Stories games are listed as three-hour timed trials. Xbox says they are free for all Xbox players and that Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential is not required. The time cap is the main restriction. A player can use the trial to learn the battle pace and the monster-riding setup, but it is not a full weekend of access unless the game is later purchased.

The two titles are separate downloads with separate trial clocks. Xbox’s listing describes the first game as a turn-based RPG about becoming a Monster Rider and forming bonds with monsters, while the sequel introduces another rider and a Rathalos story. Those descriptions help a newcomer decide which one to try first. They do not establish that trial progress or saves transfer between the games, so treat them as two individual trials.

Riders Republic stays open one day longer

Riders Republic has the longest access window in this lineup. Xbox says all players can try it from October 22 through October 26 without a Game Pass membership. The announcement connects the offer to the game’s fifth anniversary and mentions Ubisoft-themed rewards and a special concert featuring DJ Henri PFR. That makes it a separate event from the three subscription titles and the two three-hour trials.

The extra day matters if you are choosing when to install. A player who wants a short sample can fit in a three-hour Monster Hunter Stories trial during the weekend, while Riders Republic remains available through Monday, October 26. Xbox does not give a universal local-hour cutoff in the announcement. If you are planning to use the final day, confirm the exact end time in your Xbox store before relying on it.

Buying the game can extend access

Xbox says several titles have limited-time discounts during Free Play Days. Its event post lists the Dying Light 2 base game at 80% off for a limited time and gives a separate sale period for Tropico 6 through November 2. It also notes that discounts and availability vary by title and region. Prices shown on the Xbox Wire page are US storefront figures, so use the price on your own store rather than converting those numbers into a guaranteed local offer.

The same notice says players who purchase an eligible game can continue playing while keeping the Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event. It does not make a blanket statement about every game’s save files, cross-platform progress, or cloud synchronization. If you plan to continue on another device, check the game’s own account and save information before purchase. Keeping achievements is useful, but it is not the same as a promise that every kind of progress transfers.

Find the right listing before downloading

Xbox’s instructions are straightforward: open the individual game details page, sign in to the Microsoft Store, then use the Free Play Days collection on console if you are browsing from an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. The page may show an install option connected to a subscription for the first group, a timed-trial button for Monster Hunter Stories, or a free-play option for Riders Republic. Read that label before starting the download so you know which rule applies.

The event page is an Xbox offer, not a permanent giveaway. Access can depend on your account region, the game’s platform listing, and the window attached to the title. Xbox also warns that availability and sale discounts may vary. If the install button does not appear, check the correct account and the listing for your console; the official post says a sign-in is required to see the subscription install option.

Choose the sample that answers your question

For a long session without buying first, Riders Republic has the widest window because it runs through October 26. For a quick look at the turn-based Monster Hunter spin-offs, use one of the three-hour trials and decide whether you want to spend that time on the first game or the sequel. If you already subscribe to one of the listed Game Pass tiers, Dying Light 2, Let’s Build a Zoo, and Tropico 6 offer a weekend of access through October 25.

The practical cutoff is different for each group: October 25 for the three subscription games and the two timed trials, October 26 for Riders Republic, with individual trial clocks limiting the Monster Hunter titles. Check the local store before the event closes, and buy only if you want access after the stated window. That avoids treating a short trial as a full copy or assuming a subscription is required for every game in the lineup.
