Deadlock’s City Never Sleeps adds six heroes while staying invite-only

Valve’s September 29 update rebuilt much of Deadlock’s New York map, refreshed the HUD and introduced six heroes whose release order players voted on. The final hero arrived October 20, but the game remains a friend-invite playtest rather than a public release.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • City Never Sleeps launched on September 29 with a large visual update to the map and neutrals, six new heroes, The Broker, HUD changes, quality-of-life additions and accessibility options.
  • The six heroes arrived one at a time in a player-voted release order from October 2 through October 20; by October 21, the vote and rollout were complete.
  • Deadlock remains an invite-only playtest. Valve’s official page says access is by friend invite through current playtesters, and its development update says core systems are still being shaped.

The city update is not a public launch

Valve released City Never Sleeps on September 29 as a major Deadlock update. Its official page lists a visual overhaul to the map and neutrals, six new heroes, a mysterious figure called The Broker, HUD updates, accessibility options and quality-of-life changes. That is a broad patch to an active playtest, not a sign that the game has opened to everyone. The official Deadlock page still says access is limited to friend invites from playtesters. A player who sees the update in news coverage should not assume the game is now a normal public download.

PC Gamer’s September 30 coverage of Valve’s development update says the team still wanted to adjust progression and hero or hideout customization before moving to later polish phases. That is useful context for a tester deciding how to read the map changes: Valve is still using the playtest to shape core systems, not presenting the patch as a stable final package. A new player should expect hero and progression rules to keep changing during development.

The six heroes arrived in an order players chose

City Never Sleeps introduced Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba and Violet. They were not all selectable the moment the September 29 update appeared. Valve’s update materials say players could vote on which hero arrived next, with the first release scheduled for October 2. That turned the rollout into a series of dates through October rather than one large roster unlock. It also created a simple distinction for returning testers: the patch announced six characters, but their availability changed as Valve released them.

PC Gamer reported on October 21 that Nurse Harrow had joined and the City Never Sleeps voting sequence had ended. The independent Deadlock Handbook checked against the October 20 patch lists the order: Rat King on October 2, Baba on October 6, Solomon on October 9, Deadman Danny on October 13, Violet on October 16, and Nurse Harrow on October 20. That gives a returning tester a concrete way to see which additions they missed; all six are now in the playtest roster.

The vote took place in the pre-game lobby before matches. The Deadlock Handbook says votes from the winning team counted double, a player’s first win of the day also counted double, and each match added influence. The choice set release order, not an individual unlock: once a hero was released, current testers could select that hero. Valve did not publish the vote standings, and the Handbook says the result became known only when each hero went live. The release sequence is not a public popularity ranking or balance tier list. If you are deciding whom to try, use each hero’s current in-game page for abilities rather than inferring strength from the order.

The overhaul gives familiar lanes a different visual language

The update changes more than a color palette. PC Gamer’s launch report describes the city as a brighter downtown, a haunted university and a shadowy stock exchange, with buildings and neutral enemies redesigned to match their surroundings. Valve’s patch summary also lists a major visual update to the map and neutrals. For someone returning after a few weeks away, the important change is recognition: familiar routes can now be read through new scenery, while enemies and points of interest look different from the previous version.

The official summary lists several practical map and game-system improvements alongside the visual work: revised HUD information, accessibility options, updated Source 2 code, anti-cheat, network prediction, rendering and audio performance changes. Some quality-of-life changes affect moment-to-moment play, such as an ability activating immediately when its button is pressed rather than waiting for a timing window. That is a specific input-response adjustment, not a general guarantee that the game will run better on every machine. The patch notes provide a list of intended technical changes but no platform-by-platform performance benchmark.

One launch detail has already changed. The official update introduced The Broker as a mysterious merchant, but the Deadlock Handbook’s patch history says he was removed from Standard and Ranked on October 2, three days after launch; the guide notes he may return in a different form. That makes the update page a record of what arrived, not a guarantee that every feature remains active in every mode. If you do not see the Broker in those playlists now, the community-maintained history treats that as a deliberate removal, not a broken install.

The HUD and settings changes are part of the same patch

The HUD refresh gives players clearer information during a match, while the new accessibility options expand how people can interact with the game. Valve also added keybinding controls for the Avoid Hero command, which matters for players using a mouse without a middle button. These small details answer a different question from the new heroes: a returning player may have to relearn the screen layout even if they keep using a familiar character.

Deadlock’s Steam patch page also lists localization improvements, new audio effects, death and respawn music, footstep sounds and animation work across older heroes. The changes arrive in the same update, but that does not mean every older character received a visual remake. PC Gamer’s September 30 development coverage says progression and customization systems were still being developed. A player should treat the patch as a substantial update to an unfinished game, not a final feature-complete package.

New players still need a friend invite

The official City Never Sleeps page says access remains limited to friend invites through current playtesters. PC Gamer’s September 30 report likewise describes Deadlock as invite-only and says Valve did not attach a public-release date to the development update. So the answer to the buying question is not to look for a standard launch listing: the six-hero update did not open a public storefront release. If you already know a playtester, ask whether they can invite you through the access path shown by Valve. If not, the reviewed sources do not give a date when that will change.

For a current tester, the practical return-to-game question is different: the new heroes are now available, the release-order vote is complete, and the city map has changed enough that old visual landmarks may look unfamiliar. For someone outside the playtest, those facts are context, not access. The patch makes the game’s setting more legible and its roster wider for the people already admitted, while Valve continues to work on core systems before opening the doors.
