THE SHORT VERSION

  • Pearl Abyss is offering the first five hours of Crimson Desert Enhanced free on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, starting 29 October, according to Eurogamer and Pure Xbox.
  • PlayStation players need PlayStation Plus Premium or Deluxe, while every Xbox player can start the trial regardless of a paid subscription, and progress carries into the full game.
  • Eurogamer says the window closes on 6 January; Pure Xbox says the trial stays downloadable until 7 January, and neither outlet explains the one-day difference.

Five hours, two console families

Pearl Abyss has made the first five hours of Crimson Desert Enhanced free on console, from 29 October to 6 January, according to Eurogamer. The offer covers the base game on PlayStation 5 and on Xbox Series X and S, and it is the Enhanced edition specifically rather than an earlier release. Pure Xbox reports the same five-hour trial on the Xbox Store and says there are no catches with it as far as the outlet is aware.

The two outlets label it differently. Eurogamer calls it a surprise demo that lets you play for five hours and carry over your save data, while Pure Xbox calls it a five-hour free trial. Both describe the same arrangement: a timed slice of the finished game rather than a separate demo build, one that ends when the clock runs out. Eurogamer notes that the trial covers only the base game, not the new expansion.

Who can actually start it

On PlayStation the trial is limited to PlayStation Plus Premium and Deluxe subscribers, according to Eurogamer. On Xbox it is open to all players, whether or not they pay for a subscription. That gap is why the Xbox side reads as the larger giveaway: no membership tier is required, only the console and a download. Eurogamer describes the PlayStation requirement without saying whether a cheaper Plus tier would also work.

Pure Xbox explains how to find it. Players should search for the game on the console using the exact name Crimson Desert Enhanced and not any other version, and a prompt to download the free trial should then appear. The outlet adds that the trial remains available to download until 7 January, which gives roughly two months to start it.

Five hours, and then the timer stops

Progress carries over to the full game if the player decides to buy it, Eurogamer reports, which makes the trial a head start rather than a dead end. The clock is less forgiving. Once the five hours are up, that is it, and the trial cannot be restarted on a different save: Eurogamer describes the timer as final, and Pure Xbox warns that it cannot be restarted over and over.

What neither report says is how the clock is measured. There is no word on whether the timer runs during menus, downloads or idle time, and no word on whether the five hours are counted per account or per console. Those details sit with Pearl Abyss rather than with either outlet, and a player planning a long session has no reported way to check the remaining time before it expires. That leaves the five-hour cap, the trial's most practical rule, as the one a player can only learn by watching the clock.

One window, two end dates

The end date is the one place where the two reports do not quite match. Eurogamer says the trial is available from 29 October to 6 January, while Pure Xbox says it remains available to download until 7 January. The gap is a single day, and it could be the difference between the last day of play and the last day of download, but neither outlet explains which it is.

Both agree the window runs into early January, which is longer than the week or two a console demo usually gets. Anyone intending to use it late should treat 6 January as the safer date, because that is the one Eurogamer ties to playing rather than to the store listing. It is also the only end date that appears in a sentence about access rather than about downloading.

The expansion it is promoting

The trial arrived to celebrate Charting the Unknown, the game's first expansion, which came out on 29 October, according to Eurogamer. The outlet calls it the delayed Charting the Unknown, a reference to a two-week slip, and notes that the free window covers only the base game, so five hours would not reach the new content anyway. Pure Xbox describes the expansion as massive and prices it at £19.99 or $24.99 on the Xbox Store.

That framing is standard for a paid expansion. A trial pulls new players into the base game at the moment existing owners are being sold more of it, and a five-hour limit is short enough to stop before the slower middle of a long campaign. Eurogamer also notes that a Switch 2 version of the game is in development, which would eventually put the same base game on a platform that does not have it yet.

A profitable year behind the offer

Crimson Desert has sold over six million copies in three months, Eurogamer reports, and the game was profitable enough that Pearl Abyss gave every employee a $3,400 bonus. The same report puts the publisher's revenue up 419 percent. Those figures explain why a free trial is a low-risk move: the game has already covered its costs, so the trial is buying reach rather than rescuing a launch. Neither outlet reports how many of those six million sales came at full price.

The studio has also hinted at multiplayer-focused DLC and a sequel, Eurogamer reports, though neither has a date. The Phantom Blade Zero launch shows how fast a single-player action game can find an audience on one platform, while Xbox's supply constraint is the counterweight, because a trial only reaches consoles people already own. The reported Gears of War: E-Day sales cannot answer the conversion question either. Pearl Abyss has not said how many players have started the trial.
