Yacht Club says the Mina the Hollower physical release is still in progress

Sean Velasco says a boxed copy is still planned while the studio looks for a publishing and distribution partner, with no date set and no DLC in the works.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Yacht Club founder Sean Velasco said the physical edition of Mina the Hollower is still planned and that the studio is looking for a publishing and distribution partner.
  • The studio told a Reddit chat that sales have slowed quite a lot, though they left the company financially stable for now, and that there is nothing to announce on DLC.
  • Post-release work covers randomizer options, enemy and boss randomisation, more modifiers and speedrunner features, alongside quality of life and accessibility updates.

The answer, in the studio's words

Yacht Club Games says the physical edition of Mina the Hollower is still coming, and the studio has explained what is holding it up. During a Reddit chat with the Switch community this week, company founder Sean Velasco was asked about the boxed release and answered directly: "Yes! It's still planned. We're working on finding the right publishing and distribution partner to make it happen. No release date to share yet, but it's absolutely still in progress!"

Nintendo Life reports the exchange and notes that the game has been available digitally on Switch and Switch 2 since May. GoNintendo, which read the same Reddit thread, summarises the answer as a physical release that is still planned while the studio looks for the right partner. Neither outlet has a date, and neither reports a signed deal with a distributor or a printer.

A partner, not a build

The missing piece is a partner rather than a finished game. Velasco's answer puts publishing and distribution in the same phrase, which covers two jobs: a company to fund and manage the print run, and a company to move boxes into shops. Neither report says which companies are in talks, whether a deal is close, or what a physical edition would contain beyond the disc or cartridge itself.

Nintendo Life reads the timing as next year, writing that fans can expect the physical version by then, and presents that as its own expectation rather than a date from the studio. GoNintendo does not put a window on it at all. The difference matters because a partner search has no fixed end, and the only schedule either report can point to is the one the studio declined to give.

What the studio said about sales

The commercial picture is the part Yacht Club answered most openly. GoNintendo reports that the studio said Mina sold well enough to leave the company financially stable for now, while sales have slowed quite a lot. In the same thread the studio put the audience at hundreds of thousands of players across Switch and Switch 2 since May, a figure GoNintendo repeats without giving an exact number.

Sales slowing after a spring launch is the ordinary shape of a release like this, and it is also why a boxed copy can arrive late without contradicting anything the studio said in May. A physical edition reaches players who do not buy digitally, and it can be priced and timed separately from the digital release. Phantom Blade Zero's launch, with 448,000 concurrent players on Steam, is a reminder of how quickly attention around a new release moves elsewhere.

No DLC, but more features

Content is the other half of the update. Velasco said there is nothing to announce on DLC, then listed what the team is working on instead: "Expanded randomizer options, enemy and boss randomization, more modifiers, speedrunner features... lots of ways to do even more in Mina." Nintendo Life reports that the studio also mentioned quality of life and accessibility updates intended to polish the full experience.

Those additions are updates to a game that has already shipped, which is a lighter commitment than a paid expansion. GoNintendo reports that the studio has no plans for side content other than the art book and the merchandise, and that any expansion of Mina's lore would come from future mainline instalments rather than from add-on content for this one. That closes the door on story DLC more firmly than the DLC answer alone does.

What is already on sale

The merchandise line is already running. Nintendo Life reports that Yacht Club has released Mina the Hollower items through Fangamer and a soundtrack vinyl through iam8bit, and that an art book is on the way. GoNintendo lists the same art book and merchandise as the only side content in the works, which makes them the near-term substitutes for a boxed copy rather than extras arranged around one.

Two other questions came up in the same thread and got shorter answers. On crossovers with other games the studio said "we'll see", and on a Deluxe Edition it said there was nothing to announce at the moment but to stay tuned. Neither answer commits to anything, and neither outlet treats them as plans. They sit in the same category as the physical release: things the studio is willing to discuss and not willing to schedule.

The next signal is a name

The first thing to watch is a name. A publishing and distribution partner is the kind of deal that gets announced, and until one is named the boxed release has no date that can slip. Romero Games' move to a new publisher while keeping ownership of its shooter shows what that arrangement looks like from the studio side, and it is the closest thing in this week's news to the deal Yacht Club is describing.

The second is what the edition contains. On a console where one game can install at 88GB, as Modern Warfare 4 does on Switch 2, a boxed copy is partly a storage decision as well as a collector's item, and an edition defined early is less likely to arrive as a bare cartridge. Nintendo Life ends its report hoping the physical version will be the definitive one. Nothing in either report says that it will be.
